Online Safety Tips

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

Look, we get it. We are parents and guardians too. The internet is a miraculous tool that keeps the world right at our fingertips. We get the ease and simplicity that online use can provide us, and our kids. However, it is imperative that we are aware of what and whom our kids are interacting with online. There is a plethora of inappropriate content and people lurking online. It's important that we have the proper awareness and protocols in place to ensure ours and no other kids fall victim and prey to what lurks online.

Parents and guardians should always be in the know of whom their kids are talking to, and what they are doing when online and using social media apps and games. Talk to your kids, and be in the know of what it is they are doing. Set boundaries and limits for the amount of solo time they have. We can drastically reduce the number of children who fall victim to online victimization.

Tips and boundaries:

  • No sharing or trading of personal pictures online. Period.

  • Never share personal info, like home address, school or phone number.

  • Never agree to meet anyone in person without a parent's knowledge and consent.

  • Always tell a parent or trusted adult regarding any and all dialogue that felt wrong, hurtful or scary.

  • Spend time with your kids online and be aware of what they are doing with their time.

  • Look for changes in their character, demeanour and attitude.
